An ongoing Documentary project, inside a local hip-hop group based in Cheltenham.
I got to know Sketchster, Kadenza, Farai, Catchy P, Spit Milligan, General Hindsight, Stromboli, DJ NoMo and DJ Thug Jesus in October 2016. I started this journey on the street corners and in underpasses witnessing legal graffiti and rap battles, meeting some very talented artists along the way. I have immersed myself in this world of art made up of poems and paint, picking up on some very ordered morality and thought processes. Speaking to these artists and finding what roots they are flourishing from, getting up close and personal backstage; before sets and being allowed into the bedroom/studio of Sketchster (Producer of Motion Enterprise) and documenting how the group make their work. This scene holds some very important foundations for the development of a lone artist- Being able to articulate speech and thought in a clear coherent way that dances down the back bone of societies structures. Then also to envision these ideas and thoughts and to use the walls of the world as the canvas for creation, in the public domain.
I immersed myself in their world by being there and in this case smelling the paint on the walls, hearing the pitch of the music echo in my head and the feeling of being part of it all and adding to what they are creating with this very work. This group have found an avenue to really focus their soul, to paint the world with colour and fill the air with music, it is truly beautiful and these people will give you something to remember, A way of life, A morality and a vision of what you can be... the energy of the whole cosmos focused down to your eyes, hands and vocal cords.
This work is being made in support of their work and generosity, they have allowed me to capture their journey and I want to give something back at the same level they are creating on... an archive of that journey from my perspective.
